Community-based organisation · Founded 2016

A community building its own future.

Hopeful Smiles works with families across the surrounding villages — a free school, women's groups, farmer training, seed and animal support, water and health. The school is where it started. The household is where it goes next.

Why Bulopa

The obstacles are ordinary. The response is local.

These are the realities described by parents, village leaders and the surrounding communities. They are not borrowed statistics.

7–9 km

The walk for water comes before the walk to class.

Some children fetch water from a borehole several kilometres away before school. The youngest carry the smallest jerrycans. A water point inside the community changes the morning.

320

new pupils arrive every year, into classrooms that are already full.

The school does not turn children away. That promise is also the reason space, teachers, books and lunch are always under pressure.

1,160+

children are in school today. Their families need more than a classroom.

Women need an income. Farmers need seed, animals and storage. Men need a place to talk about fatherhood and violence. The school is the door; the community is the room.

What we fund

Four programmes. One community.

Every programme is partially funded and still seeking support. The number of children enrolling each year keeps growing faster than the budget.

In their words

We will continue to do our best to give these children hope for their future, because we know they are our future leaders.
